The word ‘wasting’ has a negative connotation to it. According to dictionary.com, to waste is defined as follows: “to consume, spend, or employ uselessly or without adequate return; use to no avail or profit.” So the question that next comes to mind is why. Why do we waste time when we know that it is not in our best interest?
First of all, I believe that it is in our nature to be focused on the here and now. We want what we want, when we want it. Although we do not always act on this, it is often how we feel. This can especially be seen in children before they are taught responsibility. They usually do not understand the cause and effect behind why we do things that we do not want to do. They would rather do something that is fun and enjoyable and do not want to do the things that do not make them happy. Thus I find myself dangerously close to making the point that people waste time because they are immature. Perhaps this is the case.
However, I feel that time wasters are not done out of pleasure but out of a desire to escape reality. They are used as a means to put off something undesirable that is going on in a person’s life. Is this a harmless way to relieve stress, take your mind off work, or have some fun with friends? I believe that it begins this way. But I propose the idea that after some amount of time people begin to become addicted to putting things off and wasting time. In the sense of a gaming system, they are controlled by their controller. What they once used to control a game and waste time is now calling to them every time they are faced with difficulty or even boredom. I am not saying that XBOXs are alive, but there is a nagging voice inside a person’s head that suggests, “You could be playing me right now instead of doing homework.” After realizing the fun received from spending time in an XBOX (I only use the example of an XBOX because it is one that I am very familiar with. In a later blog I will discuss some of the many other time wasters.), people often do not want to go perform the necessary duties or even the joys of life. Perhaps it is that they become so ingrained in a sedentary and escape-from-reality way of life that when they want to resurface to the world of the living they simply don't know how.
